Prince in Aussie kick-start
By Nui Te Koha
18sep03
PRINCE will launch a comeback with a world tour starting in Melbourne.
The master of funk, pop and rock, will perform at Rod Laver Arena
on October 21.
And in a coup for fans, 45-year-old Prince will perform his greatest
hits before retiring those songs forever.
His major hits include 1999, Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Kiss
and Purple Rain.
Prince last toured Australia in 1992, playing sell-out shows at the
then National Tennis Centre and a secret gig at The Palace.
He swanned about town with two hired models, Diamond and Pearl, constantly
at his side.
"When I'm on stage, the audience has come into my room,"
he said at the time. "What I want to do is create excitement
and provoke people as much as I can."
Many critics have urged Prince to go back to basics and the Melbourne
show will attract worldwide attention.
Promoter Paul Dainty and US promotions giant Clear Channel will announce
the tour today.
"This has come like a bolt out of the blue for everyone,"
Dainty said late yesterday.
"Prince is renowned for doing everything suddenly and, in classic
style, we will have Prince here very soon. He has committed to doing
all the hits, so we are in for a long show of Prince classics."
In a typical Prince twist, he will scrap those songs from his live
shows after this tour.
"Prince will perform his hits for the last time," Dainty
confirmed.
In his rise to fame, Prince borrowed from Little Richard, James Brown
and Jimi Hendrix and influenced a new generation of performers to
fuse funk and rock.
His sexual image and risque live shows predated Madonna.
His decision to return to the spotlight as Prince, and perform the
hits, is a landmark. He has spent the past decade in the commercial
and critical wilderness.
In 1993, he changed his name to an symbol, then The Artist Formerly
Known As Prince, to protest about his recording and publishing deal
with Warner Bros.
He said the deal, which ended in 2000, amounted to slavery.
Prince tickets will go on sale on September 30.
In another summer tour developments, Christina Aguilera will play
a third show, at Rod Laver Arena, on December 17. Tickets go on sale
on September 29.

XPECTATION
: MADHOUSE #3
le jazzy The Rainbow Children.
Des9 titres, on retiendra Xogitate,
Xpectation is the album offered on January first,
2003 to all the members of the NPGMC
and was sent by email, and was recorded just after TRC, in 2001-2002.
What was Xpetcted is here : a princey inspired jazz. The jazz is
not a new musical direction to Prince. Since the song 'Crazy You'
on his first album For You, there has been productions with Sheila
E, The Family and especialy Madhouse. Prince always showed his
talents
of true musician with jazz music.
Tracklist:
Xhalation [2:03]
Xcogitate [3:33]
Xemplify [5:53]
Xpectation [4:01]
Xotica [3:05]
Xogenous [4:11]
Xpand [6:10]
Xosphere [3:34]
Xpedition [8:23]
Xpectation, they is 40 mn long of super-cool
instrumental material. Despite a more complex musical approach (Xperimental?
Not that much!) Candy Dulfer to the sax, John Blackwell at the battery
and the young genius of the violin Vanessa Mae, the album could
easily be the latest Madhouse CD! And the first Madhouse was just
antoher "princely jazz" pearl. Xpectation is smooth and has got
such a great sound, perfectly relaxing without annoying at all.
Is it necessary to have listened to a minimum of jazz music in his
life to appreciate it? Who never did, anyway? From the 9 short tracks,
Xogitate has to be listen with a glass of (french!)wine!
Xemplify is a trip with gypsies flashes, Xpectation
takes you back to the70's, kinda psychedeli-trip. Xotica
is a more subtle companion to "8" from Madhouse. With Xogenus,
Prince created a favorite of jazz-friendly radios. A true jazzy
trip which can give relief to the painful feelings we feel in some
war days… Xosphere is my favorite and by
far: a pure wonder of jazz-rock'n'roll spacial able to relax an
autist in full crisis! A true spiritual massage. The guitar and
its riff cherish you neurons and nerves during 3mn33. Xpedition
is a track which explodes in all the directions in a cavalcade of
batteries ending with cries of a new born child (?). A bonus track
for the lucky ones: Empty Room, a well-known bootleg,
here in a more muscled and live version. Inspired and very healthy
album, but which would not forecaste of anything the future musical
orientation of the unpredictible Prince… Where can you get
this CD? Ask the belgian Prince!
TRC
+ ONA LVE = TOP
Canal
Canal +, a major national french TV, actually broadcast an add for
The Rainbow Children, the 'new Prince album'. This
a very good animation of the CD cover with 'She loves me 4 me' played
background. Released one year ago, the TRC CD seems to sell well,
and is even more in highlights with the recent release of ONA LIVE.
Canal +, confirms its major participation with the NPG connection,
after live shows and the Purple Rain broadcasting.
ONA Live: a couple of hours of joy into a wonderfull packaging.
If you prefer to invest in musical masterpiece rather than in Enron,
it's really worthy! The few ones who are disnontented must be very
hard and nasty secret die hard fans! Prince just can't play his
huge repertory live on 3 CDs! The piano medley that a few people
criticised is simply wonderfull and very touching. We are close
to wonderland! An historical pack, by its content and its absolute
commercial independance! The final Anstesia gives you an idea of
what God and angels probably listen to above you… An other
Princey event is the book 'Possessed' by Alex Hahn,
it will be released in April 2003.
PRINCE:
ZENITH PARIS 28 OCTOBRE 2002
Its Snow In April » et le fameux "Nothing compares
to You".
You » etc.
Its Gonna be a Beautifull Night » immortalisé
en 1987 sur le double Sign Of The Time.
PRINCE:
ZENITH PARIS 28th OCTOBER 2002
October 28.2002 at the Zenith in Paris. Getting strong with good
reactions surrounding his CD "The Rainbow Children", Prince
offered a particularly revealing concert to an astonishingly young
public that mainly was here to discover the american "showman".
After a 2h30 long concert , mainly lengthened by the public's screams,
a page seems definitively turned in the career and personality of
Prince. Pop icon in the 80's, hated by the press and ignored by
the medias in the 90s, the new millennium is a consecration to Prince,
considered as an Artist with a big "A". The risky orientation
to jazz-fusion along with the natural effects of being 44 years
old seemed to have pushed Prince to choose, deliberately or not,
to privilege music rather than "Show".
The concert begins at 20.30 (in 1998, he started at 11.00 pm and
finished at 2 am!), the +6000 seats are not left empty! 2 hours
before the concert started, some tickets were sold at the black
market from 80 to 300 $! At such a price, one can demand a "super
concert". Unfortunately, that starts quite badly
Prince
dispatches the TRC's tracks without real conviction. Black suit,
the haircut of a british schoolboy, Prince is professional but rather
cold. His moves and pausing are sometime ridiculous! However, this
"play it fast, I ain't got time" is pushed by a fantastic
and loud sound during the entire concert . The maestros Macéo
Parker and Candy Dufler simply are wonderfull! What about the guitar?
The guitar
Prince has his reputation and proves it with
a very impressive scene of an alive incarnation of a "living
guitar"! Interruption of the concert: lights decline, technicians
appear to gather the equipment
The crowd, charmed, make Prince
understand that he HAS to stay. He can't do it to Paris, a city
with only 1 concert every 4 years? It would simply be unacceptable!
Miracle: Prince, white dressed and like if he was free from the
costume from the first part, kicks a reincarnated "Pop Life".
Then he comes in total contradiction with his formerly message when
he said that he would NOT play the past, but he would play the future.
He gives a review of tracks from his great albums from 1985 to 1987.
A lot of ballads, amongst them the moving "Sometime It s Snow
In April". And this is what Prince revealed that night to his
new public but also to his fans: his voice. A voice like the ones
of only a few singers in the music history, moving from bariton
to falseto. And then one realize how lucky we are to assist to the
pure expression of a voice, like the ones of holly blues/song legendaries.
Finally, Prince might have returned to his 1986 essay : to be a
BLUES Artist. A musical world where only music and voice counts,
without effects or dance, and filled with messages. Religious and
political messages. One will moderately appreciate this one: "I
make music for God. Not for you who are in front of me". We
forgive this as he finaly showed a lot of affection to the parisian
public that night. "The Artist Formerly Jumping and Vicious"
is now the new voice of his jazz/blues ancestors. A blues also called
wisdom. A wisdom that nevertheless can let a place to an infernal
funk, with "The Days Of Wild" as an apotheosis, an anthem
even stronger than "It s Gonna be has Beautifull Night"
from SOTT. The circus stopped with the electronic voice from TRC,
ending a concert insured by a thin "1.50 m" man. A little
shining man who has known disco, punk, Rock, pop, techno and at
last but not least dance music. This man is a rebel, free and
WILD!
A day in heaven's life…
