Métis Canadienne née
d'un père commanche et d'une mère allemande
(difficile avec de tels liens de manquer de caractère
!), Denise Matthew est mannequin à Toronto quand
elle rencontre Prince, en 1982. Passionaria ou fraternité,
nul ne saura, le couple donne naissance à Vanity
6, LE girls-band de Prince, qui voulu sans doute faire un
pied de nez à Rick James, son - petit - adversaire
funk qui avait son groupe à succès Mary Jane
Girl. Si Vanity 6 faillis s'appeler Vagina (…), il
n'en est pas moins l'un des premiers girls-band salace,
avec comme seules tenues de scène… porte-jarretelles
et balconnets ! L'effet médiatique est immédiat
et enthousiaste, mais moindre concernant l'album en lui-même.
Seul le tube "Nasty Girl", premier rap-funk féminin,
cartonne. Le reste de l'album est très électro,
notamment avec l'arabisant "Make Up". Le final
"Wet Dreams" (littéralement "rêves
mouillés"…) écarte l'album de tout
succès commercial. À écouter toutefois
le jubilatoire "If A Girl Answers", qui renvoie
Ru Paul et autres vilaines pétasses à leurs
cahiers. Après du solo raté et quelques rôles
dans des séries B, Vanity est partie prêcher
la Sainte Parole ! Je vous assure que c'est vrai.

beauty, mix of a comanchero father and a german mother (she
can not have a lack of personality, with such a hot blood!),
Denise Matthew was a manequin in Toronto when she met Prince
in 1982. Passion or fraternity, the couple gave birth to
one of the first Girls-Band : Vanity 6. More radical than
the soft Mary Jane Girl of the funcky star Rick James, the
band had as only costume… fine lingerie! The visual
impact was there, and the single "Nasty Girl"
is a legendary hit. But the rest of the LP is quite disapointing.
Despite a cold electro orientation, with the arabic "Make
Up" track, nothing exciting.
The final "Wet Dream" (what a programm…)
closes a probably too fast realeased album. After a solo
flop and roles in B-movies, Vanity falled in love with…
God! She'is a preacher, feeling reconceiled with the purity
she had inside (deep inside?) her…

Suite à l'abandon de Vanity, exténuée
par la tournée Purple Rain, Prince persiste à
conserver son girls-band et emploie Apolonia, la beauté
du film titre, et transforme donc Vanity 6 en Apolonia 6.
Et de la beauté, il y en a dans ce fantastique album
qu'aucun critique ne pourrait honnêtement dénigrer.
Un premier morceau en forme de cathédrale musicale,
qui fait éclater les synthés de toute part telle
une percée ensoleillée avec "Happy Birthday
Mr Christian", enchainé par le tube flingueur
"Sex Shooter" puis catapulté par le chef-d'œuvre
"Blue Limousine", titre sur-puissant et avant-gardiste,
la face B est imparable de maîtrise électro-funk.
La face B est plus Rock, plus câline mais toute aussi
réussie. Indéniablement, virer Vanité
était la meilleure chose à faire, dommage qu'il
n'y a jamais eu d'Apolonia 12… Apolonia a préféré
les projecteurs de petites séries TV…
When the Vanity
left Prince on the exhausting Purple Rain Tour, he decided
to give his girls band a second chance. Vanity 6 Became Apolonia
6 with Apolonia Kotero, beautifull girl who made the dream
come true : a fantastic album. The first track, "happy
Birthday Mr Christian" is a musical cathedral, enlighted
with synthetic rays and grace. "Sex Shooter", with
the lingerie vidoe clip is a sexy blockbuster. "Blue
Limousine" closes the B-Side with a bouncing beat serving
a beautifully dramatic complain. Wow! Exhausted by this punshy
trip, we cool down with an accoustic Rock B-side, caressing
and jocking. The only shame with Apolonia 6 is the missing
Apolonia 12… Since, Apolonia is showing in soaps.

Souvent sous-estimées par les
fans de Prince (un fan est ingrat par définition),
ces deux amies d'enfance inséparables sont, au même
titre que Sheila E, une pierre de fondation capitale dans
la carrière de Prince. Celui-ci, d'ailleurs, a cruellement
déploré sa rupture avec elles dans "In
This Bed I Scream", en 1996… Wendy Melvoin et Lisa
Coleman sont issues de la culture folk, donc blanche, et apporteront
cette touche d'humanité à la fois douce et intellectuelle
dés 1980 pour Lisa, qui fut sa claviériste jusqu'en
1987. Grâce à ces deux filles, Prince découvrit
Joni Mitchell (avec laquelle Prince a fait quelques sessions
studio), les Beatles (Prince ayant un sérieux penchant
pour les Rolling Stones), Mike Olfield et d'autres ténors
de la Folk et d'une musique Pop plus Européenne qu'Américaine.
Leur premier single, "Waterfall", est une véritable
splendeur qui a connue un bon succès d'estime, ainsi
que le "Be My Baby", du très funky "Fruit
at the Botom". Mais le meilleur reste leur premier album,
d'une fraîcheur incomparable, avec ce que nos deux filles
savent faire le mieux : de la Folkqui parle au cœur.
Depuis 10 ans, Wendy et Lisa ne cessent de faire cession sur
cession, participent à des musiques de film et albums
(Mike Olfield, Eric Clapton, BB KIng…). Combien de talents
sont sortis de l'écurie princière…
The two girls helped
Prince to get higher on melodies and to reach a wider white
audience. Lisa Coleman was on the synthetizer from 1981 to
1987. She gave Prince a Cold Wave approach and Wendy the Folk
influence. The Folk influence will be very strong, and Prince,
along with the 2 girls created some of the best musicaly perfect
tracks of the 80's : "Dream Factory", "Raspberry
Berret", "Kiss"… after the separation,
Prince complained in the song "In This Bed I Scream",
1998, and he was right to regret, as he still kept the best
of the collaboration and friendship : the accoustic "The
Truth" CD, "Lovesexy", "Chaos and Desorder"…
The first single of the girls was "Waterfall", a
masterpieace of Rock dignity. Their first LP is probably the
best, as they play the music they really felt comfortable
with: Folk music. Their Joni Mitchell influence is on "The
Truth", the psychedelic touch is in "Around The
World In A Day", the orchestra arrangements are in "Parade"…
Maybe we can come back 2 gether?
During the long eight years between "Eroïca"
and "Girl Bros", Wendy & Lisa had a huge volume
of work: appearing on a score of albums as studio musicians,
and taking on increasing amounts of movie scores and production
work (from Mike Olfield to Eric Clapton). Who said girls can't
make it ?
