En 1934, Ella Jane Fitzgerald fait ses débuts au théâtre de Harlem Apollo à N.Y. Alors qu'elle devait danser, c'est en chantant qu'elle gagne le premier prix. Ella a perdu ses parents l'âge de 15 et a beaucoup souffert de violences physique au centre d'éducation surveillée pour enfants noirs. Après s'être échappé du centre, Ella vie alors dans les rues d'Harlem. Mariée deux fois, ses deux mariages finissent en divorce.
Ella a connu un succès légendaire avec d'innombrables récompenses dont 13 Grammy Awards. Sans jamais avoir reçu de formation vocale spécifique, la voix d'Ella est demeurée uniforme dans sa clarté et son timbre enfantin. Ses vocalises spontanés et souvent pyrotechniques de scat formaient son style unique. En regardant sur le catalogue riche d'Ella, le nom de Granz Normand est omniprésent. Ella a rencontré le producteur en 1949. Ils ont développé des relations de travail qui ont duré 40 ans ! Sous la direction de Granz, Ella a enregistré ses albums légendaires "songbook" et une série d'albums chacuns consacrés aux chansons d'un compositeur américain. Entre les années de 1956 et 1964, Ella a enregistré les albums de "songbook" avec la musique de Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, George et Ira Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern et Johnny Merce. Granz a également produit les collaborations phénoménales d'Ella avec Count Basie et duke Ellington, "On the Sunny Side of the Street" et"Ella at Duke's Place." et les quatre albums "Ella Fitzgerald/Joe Pass", chacuns considérés comme étant des classiques du jazz.
Il est stupéfiant de voir qu'Ella est parvenue à ne pas tomber dans le goufre terrible du système de l'assistance sociale des enfants des années 30. Victime de la pauvreté et de la violence, gravement malade, Ella est parvenue à dépasser les circonstances les plus effroyables. Ella a enchainé les concerts jusqu'en 1992, date à laquelle elle a dû être amputée des deux jambes. Elle est décédée en1996.

In 1934, Ella Jane Fitzgerald made her singing debut at the the Harlem Apollo Theatre in N.Y. She intended to dance, but she tried to sing and I won first prize.
Born in Newport News, Virginia in 1917 and orphaned at the age of 15 and there suffered physical abuse. Having escaped from the reformatory, Ella was literally living in the streets of Harlem when she was discovered by Webb. She was married twice, both marriages ended in divorce.
A diabetic for many years, in 1992, both of her legs were amputated below the knee. As an artist, however, Ella achieved legendary success with countless awards including a Kennedy Center Award and thirteen Grammy Awards.
Despite never having received formal vocal training, Ella's voice remained uniform in its clarity and child-like timbre. Her spontaneous, often pyrotechnic scat vocalisations, in fact, were a trademark of her style.
In looking back upon Ella's rich catalogue of recordings, the name of Norman Granz consistently emerges in conjunction with that of Ella's. Ella met the record producer and founder of both the Verve and Pablo jazz labels in 1949, after which the two developed a working relationship which lasted forty years. Under the direction of Norman Granz, Ella recorded her legendary "songbook" albums — a series of albums each devoted to the songs of a particular American composer.
Between the years of 1956 and 1964, Ella recorded songbook albums featuring the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer. Granz also produced Ella's phenomenal collaborations with Count Basie and Duke Ellington, respectively entitled "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and "Ella at Duke's Place." and the four Ella Fitzgerald/Joe Pass duet albums, each of which are deservedly considered jazz classics.
As amazing is the fact that she managed not to fall through the cracks of the segregated child welfare system of the 1930's. A victim of poverty and abuse, Ella was able to transcend circumstances. Ella remained performed until 1992. She died on June 15th 1996. She was 79.
