Merveilles berbères

Matoub Lounès repose au pied d'un cerisier. Le 25 juin 1998, Matoub Lounès n'est plus. Il a été achevé de deux balles, l'une dans le crâne, l'autre en plein cœur. Lui qui avait échappé à la mort tant de fois (en septembre 1994 notamment, Matoub avait été enlevé par un commando du GIA. Toute la Kabylie sous le coup de l'émotion avait réagi, quelques jours plus tard il avait était relâché) . Son ssassinat a été revendiqué à Londres par Hassan Hattab du GIA. Pour Malika la sœur de Matoub, il ne fait pas de doute" ce sont les islamistes qui l'on assassiné, mais les commanditaires du crime sont au pouvoir. Sa mort arrange les deux camps."
Matoub lounès est devenu le symbole de cette autre Algérie : une Algérie démocratique et libre qui refuse à la fois la dictature insidieuse des militaires et le totalitarisme barbare des islamistes ; une Algérie fière d'elle-même, de sa diversité culturelle et linguistique, fière de sa dimension berbère, ce substrat culturel où s'enracine l'identité algérienne.
Son engagement remonte aux début des années 70. L'enfance l'a marqué à vif. Au sortir de la lutte pour l'indépendance nationale. Arabisation forcée. L'expérience du service national lui donne une conscience politique à sa rébellion. L'humiliation, la négation, la détermination….L'exil fut peut-être pour Matoub Lounès la pire des épreuves.
Après 20 ans de carrière, il laisse derrière lui plus de 30 enregistrements qui sont autant de créations musicales et poétiques.
Maladroit parfois, Matoub Lounès était un homme de l'ouverture, cette quête jamais assouvie de liberté : ouverture aux autres, ouverture de la tradition sur la modernité, ouverture du passé sur l'avenir, ouverture politique. L'artiste engagé prenait de l'étoffe. Chaque jour qui passait ancrait un peu plus en lui la conviction d'avoir à assumer un destin national. Son assassinat est survenu dix jours avant l'entrée en vigueur de la loi portant généralisation de l'arabe classique en Algérie. Il tenait à ce que sa "lettre au pouvoir" le titre de son dernier CD sorte justement le 5 juillet (jour d'application de cette loi). Ainsi symboliquement face à la loi Ouyahia, il offrait aux algériens une autre loi, celle que les manifestants, en Kabylie, à Alger ou à Paris, ont appelé : "La loi Matoub". Matoub Lounès reste un enfant du beau peuple khabyle.

Beautifull berber people

Matoub Lounes rests in peace close to a cherry tree. June 25, 1998, Matoub Lounes will not sing any more. Killed of two balls. He alreadty escaped death  in September 1994 in particular. His music, made of poetic engaged lyrics surfed on accurate guitar lines and inspired berber mid-beats. Matoub had previously been captured by a commando of the GIA . All Kabylie under the blow of the emotion had reacted, so a few days later he was free. His murder was officialy claimed  from London by Hassan Hattab of the GIA. For Malika, Matoub's sister, no doubt: "islamists killed him, but partners from the shadow of crime are with the government. His death arranges the two camps."Matoub mainly lived in France after being kidnapped by Muslim rebels in late 1994 and being held for more than two weeks. He was one of a number of personalities, including popular singers and scholars and writers, killed by Muslim rebels.
Until his last recording Matoub Lounes denounced the islamists. Matoub lounes became the symbol of this other Algeria: democratic and free which refuses the insidious dictatorship of soldiers and barbarian totalitarianism of the islamists. Algeria is proud of its cultural  and linguistic diversity. Algeria is berber.
Matoub's engagement goes up with the debut 70's. People were forced to speak and learn arab. The experience of the national service gives him a political consciousness. Rebellion. humiliation, negation, determination made him a Poet who managed to translate algerian's sorrows and joy, aspirations in sweetness or fury. "For credibility, the poet must be marginal and adapt to the maximum his life to his words ". The exile was the worst. After 20 years of musical activity, (the output of his firts tape goes back to 1978) he leaves behinds him more than 30 recordings which are as many musical and poetic creations played forever. Awkward sometimes, Matoub Lounes was a man of openened minded desires.

The artist  assumed a national destiny. His assassination occurred ten days before the law carried the  generalisation of the classical Arabic in Algeria. His last CD was released precisely on July 5 (day of application of this law). Thus symbolically algerians secretely fololowed another law, written on CD's and on forbidden books :"the law of Matoub". Matoub Lounes remains the child of the beautiful people from khabylie and from all around the world.
